Importance of Hydration

Water is one of the most important

elements all living things need!

Water helps nearly every part of the human body function. Our bodies are made of at least 60% water!  Because of this, it is important to understand water's role in healthy lifestyles.

What water does in our bodies:

  • Water is required for breathing
  • Regulates body temperature. For example, when we exercise water is removed in the form of sweat
  • Carries nutrients and oxygen to all cells in the body
  • Helps to make food into energy
  • Removes waste

We lose about 2.5 liters of water everyday! How does this happen?

  • Breathing
  • Sweating
  • Going to the bathroom

We have to make up for the loss by replacing the water we lose with water found in our food and drink, especially by drinking plain water.

If you don't drink enough water it can lead to dehydration, which means you don't have enough water in your body.

Try to drink 8 glasses of water a day to stay hydrated!
