Swimming/Pool Safety

Did you know that according to Safe Kids WorldWide drowning is the SECOND leading cause of unintentional death among children ages 1-14 in the United States?  And about 9 out of 10 fatal events occur during a brief lapse in supervision. Parents need to watch children at all times while swimming because drownings can happen in a matter of SECONDS!

Drownings increase 89  percent during the months of May, June, July, and August.

Safe Kids Worldwide reported that only 69 percent of parents said they stay in visual contact with their children at ALL times while they are swimming at pools.  They also found that many children drown when they wander outside and fall into their own backyard pools.

To prevent 50 - 90% of swimming pool drownings and near drownings put up four-sided fencing around all pools and spas.

Prevention Tips:

Educate parents to actively supervise children in and around water.

When door alarms, pool alarms, and automatic pool covers are installed correctly they can add extra safety measures.

Install anti-entrapment drain devices to avoid drain entanglement and entrapment in pools and spas.

Begin teaching children to swim after age 4.

Teach students not to dive into water less than 9 feet deep.
